Sambucus nigra · Whole Dried Elderberries · Traditional Botanical Pantry
Deeply coloured and naturally tart, Elderberries are a traditional European fruit recognised for their rich berry character and distinctive place in seasonal kitchen preparations.
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) grows on a flowering shrub or small tree that produces clusters of cream-coloured blossoms followed by purple-black fruits.
Our whole dried Elderberries are packed as a single botanical ingredient for properly cooked syrups, preserves and warming berry beverages. Their naturally occurring anthocyanins contribute to the characteristic dark colour.
At Flowers from my Meadow, we keep it pure and uncomplicated: carefully packed whole dried Elderberries for the botanical pantry.
How to Prepare Safely
Elderberries must be thoroughly cooked before eating or drinking. Raw or inadequately cooked elderberries, particularly unripe berries, can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Do not use them as a simple cold infusion or eat them directly from the pouch.
For culinary preparations, simmer the berries thoroughly in plenty of water until fully cooked, then strain out seeds and any remaining solids. Follow a tested elderberry food-preparation recipe rather than assuming steeping alone makes the berries safe.
Precautions
Do not eat raw or undercooked Elderberries. Do not consume elder leaves, stems, bark, roots or unripe fruits. If pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a medical condition, seek professional advice before medicinal use. Elderberry foods do not replace medical care.
