  • 1 small cinnamon stick (Cinnamomum verum, Ceylon cinnamon)
  • 2 cups water
  • Honey, optional

Method

  1. Place the dried Elderberries, Rosehips, cinnamon stick and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring to a full boil and keep boiling for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for a further 10–15 minutes, until the Elderberries are thoroughly cooked.
  4. Strain very carefully through a fine filter to remove Elderberry seeds and solids and Rosehip seed hairs.
  5. Sweeten with honey if desired, and serve warm.

Preparation & safety notes

  • Original preserved recipe: The amounts, full-boil step, additional simmer, cinnamon and optional honey are transcribed from the Rosehips product-description archive.
  • Elderberry cooking is essential: Elderberries must be properly cooked before consumption. Raw or inadequately cooked Elderberries, unripe fruit and plant leaves or stems can cause illness. Do not replace this method with a cold infusion or a short steep.
  • Strain the fruits thoroughly: Remove Elderberry solids and seeds. Whole Rosehips contain fine internal hairs that can irritate the mouth and throat; strain them through a suitably fine filter before serving.
  • Personal precautions: Avoid ingredients to which you are allergic. If pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, managing a medical condition or concerned about kidney stones, seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before regular or concentrated use. Honey is not suitable for infants under 12 months.
  • No treatment claims: This is a traditional botanical drink for culinary enjoyment and not a treatment for colds, flu or any other condition.
  • Photography: Shows the authentic Elderberries product pouch, not a simulated prepared beverage.
