Our Heritage

Every family has a story.

Ours begins in gardens, fields, and fertile soil tended by generations before us.

Long before Flowers from my Meadow existed, a love of growing things was already woven into our family history.

In the early 1900s, my husband's Great-Great-Uncle, Albert Williams, cared for the meadow gardens of Holy Trinity Church in Badgeworth, Cheltenham, England. A dedicated horticulturist, he devoted his life to cultivating beauty, nurturing plants, and tending the land with care and purpose.

As the years passed, the tradition continued through Great-Grandfather Charles Williams and later Grandfather Derek Williams. Together they worked the community vegetable allotments of Cheltenham, carrying forward a family legacy of gardening, stewardship, and connection to the natural world.

Across the ocean, another branch of our story was taking root.

In 1949, my grandfather, Stephanus Roets, established himself along the fertile banks of South Africa's Orange River. There he farmed the land, raising livestock and cultivating crops in one of the country's most remarkable agricultural regions.

Alongside him stood my grandmother, Gladys Roets, whose passion for growing was evident in every corner of her homestead. Her flourishing vegetable gardens, colourful flowers, and bustling poultry yard became a source of nourishment, beauty, and abundance for her family and community.

Though separated by continents, both families shared a common thread—a deep respect for the land and an understanding that life's greatest gifts often begin with a seed.

From the meadow gardens of Gloucestershire to the fertile valleys of South Africa, generations of growers, gardeners, and farmers passed down not only knowledge and skills, but also an appreciation for nature's rhythms, seasons, and abundance.

These roots form the foundation of who we are today.

They remind us that every harvest begins with patience, every garden begins with hope, and every generation has a responsibility to leave the soil a little richer than they found it.

Our story is one of heritage, stewardship, and a lasting connection to the natural world—a legacy that continues to inspire everything we do.
