Illicium verum · Whole Dried Star Anise Pods · Aromatic Botanical Pantry

Beautifully star-shaped and richly aromatic, Whole Star Anise adds a sweet, liquorice-like character to culinary spice blends, warming beverages and seasonal recipes.

Chinese Star Anise (Illicium verum) is the dried fruit of an evergreen tree native to parts of East and Southeast Asia. Its woody, star-shaped fruits typically contain several pointed segments, each enclosing a shiny seed.

Our Whole Star Anise is identified as Illicium verum and supplied as intact dried pods. The characteristic fragrance makes it a familiar ingredient in Asian spice mixtures, mulled drinks, gently simmered syrups and fragrant botanical preparations.

At Flowers from my Meadow, we keep it pure and uncomplicated: whole dried Star Anise, carefully packed for your kitchen and botanical pantry.

How to Use

For culinary infusions: Add one whole star to a saucepan of warm apple juice, mulled wine, spiced syrup or a savoury broth and gently simmer to release its fragrance. Remove the pod before serving.

For cooking: Use sparingly in slow-cooked dishes, stewed fruit, marinades, poached pears and spice blends.

Precautions

Use correctly identified Chinese Star Anise (Illicium verum) only. Japanese Star Anise (Illicium anisatum) and some other related species are toxic and must never be substituted. Do not use star anise tea for infants or young children.

Use in normal culinary quantities; avoid concentrated medicinal use without professional advice, particularly during pregnancy, breastfeeding or alongside medication.
