Boswellia serrata · Whole Frankincense Resin · Botanical Formulations

Warm, resinous and subtly citrus-scented, Frankincense Resin is far more than a traditional incense ingredient. These beautiful natural resin tears offer a versatile starting point for botanical formulation, handcrafted skin-care preparations and natural perfumery.

Harvested from Boswellia serrata trees, frankincense is an aromatic oleo-gum-resin with a complex composition of resinous, gum and volatile aromatic fractions. Formulators value this distinctive raw material for the character it brings to carefully prepared oil infusions, extracts, balms and fragrance creations.

At Flowers from my Meadow, our Frankincense Resin is kept pure and uncomplicated — a single botanical raw material for exploration, making and meaningful everyday rituals.

Botanical Identity

  • Botanical name: Boswellia serrata.
  • Plant family: Burseraceae.
  • Plant part: naturally hardened aromatic oleo-gum-resin.
  • Form: dried whole resin tears and pieces.
  • Aroma: woody, balsamic, lightly citrus-like and warmly resinous.

Ways to Use Frankincense Resin

  • Botanical oil infusions: use finely crushed resin with a suitable carrier oil and an appropriate extraction method before filtering; some gum and resin fragments will remain undissolved.
  • Handmade balms and body butters: use a properly prepared, filtered frankincense infusion or extract in an external-use cosmetic formulation.
  • Natural perfumery: explore frankincense as a woody, balsamic base note in professionally prepared botanical extracts and perfume blends.
  • Botanical formulation: the raw resin may be processed into different extracts depending on which components the formulation is designed to include.
  • Traditional aromatic rituals: warm a small amount using a suitable resin burner when an incense-style aromatic experience is desired.

Meadow Formulation Idea — Frankincense Botanical Balm

For an anhydrous balm, a formulator may begin by preparing a frankincense-infused cosmetic carrier oil, filtering out all remaining resin particles, and incorporating the resulting oil into a properly balanced beeswax-and-butter balm. Use appropriate hygiene, compatibility testing and an established cosmetic formulation. The raw resin does not simply melt or dissolve completely into oil, and sediment must be removed before use.

Understanding Resin Extracts

Frankincense contains components with differing solubility. Water preparations, oil infusions and alcohol extracts are not interchangeable and do not necessarily contain the same constituents. A prepared extract is also different from frankincense essential oil. Choose a method and concentration suited to your intended cosmetic, aromatic or culinary application.

Traditional Fragrance Preparation

For aromatic use, place a small piece in a suitable purpose-made, heatproof resin warmer or incense burner according to the manufacturer's instructions. Never leave heating resin or charcoal unattended; keep the area ventilated and avoid breathing smoke directly.

Precautions

Patch test properly formulated external products; concentrated resin preparations may irritate sensitive skin. Do not apply raw resin, undiluted extracts or homemade preparations to wounds, eyes or mucous membranes. If pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a medical condition, seek professional advice before medicinal or concentrated use. The ingredient has traditionally been used in some food preparations, but concentrated extracts, solid resin and essential oil should not be treated as interchangeable forms for oral use. Avoid heating over an open flame and keep out of reach of children and pets.

Size & Packaging

Choose a 10g or 50g resealable kraft pouch of dried Boswellia serrata Frankincense Resin. Individual tears naturally vary in size, colour and shape.

Storage

Keep the pouch tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Use clean, dry utensils when handling the resin.

The Meadow Workshop — Frankincense-Infused Body Oil

Ingredients: 1 tsp finely crushed Frankincense Resin, ½ cup suitable cosmetic carrier oil, a clean heat-safe container and a fine filter.

Method: Warm the resin gently with the carrier oil using a low double boiler for 1–2 hours without letting it boil. Cool and filter carefully, repeating if necessary to remove solids. Transfer to a clean, properly labelled bottle. Resin does not dissolve fully into oil. For external use only: patch test first and avoid broken skin, eyes and mucous membranes.
