Valeriana officinalis · Cut Dried Root & Rhizome · Traditional European Botanical
Deeply earthy and instantly recognisable by its distinctive aroma, Valerian Root is a traditional botanical with a long history in European herbal practice.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial flowering plant with finely divided leaves and clusters of small pinkish-white flowers. The underground roots and rhizomes are the parts most commonly associated with historical herbal preparations.
Our dried Valerian Root is supplied as cut, fibrous botanical material, with a naturally strong, musky and earthy scent. Its fragrance can be markedly more pronounced than that of many other dried roots.
At Flowers from my Meadow, we keep it pure and uncomplicated: carefully packed dried Valerian Root, valued for its earthy aroma and longstanding place in traditional root infusions and thoughtfully blended herbal preparations.
Traditional Botanical Preparations
Valerian Root has historically appeared in hot-water infusions, extracts and blended herbal formulas. These preparations may differ widely in concentration and composition; loose dried root is not equivalent to a standardised extract.
Evidence for treating chronic insomnia or anxiety is uncertain. Consult a suitably qualified healthcare professional before using Valerian internally, especially alongside other herbs or medicines that cause drowsiness. No self-directed medicinal dosage or bedtime tincture regimen is recommended here.
Botanical Field Guide — Root, Aroma & Preparation
Compare Valerian's fibrous dried root pieces with its historical flowering-plant illustrations. Its unusually strong earthy aroma is part of the botanical's identity. Use this material as an educational display until a qualified practitioner has confirmed whether and how an ingestible preparation may be appropriate.
Precautions
Do not combine with alcohol, sleeping medicines or other sedatives. Valerian can cause drowsiness and may impair alertness; do not drive or operate machinery if affected. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safety information is insufficient.
Consult a healthcare professional if taking medicines, managing a liver condition, or considering prolonged use. Stop use if sensitivity or other adverse effects occur. Do not substitute Valerian for medical assessment of persistent sleep difficulties.
