Ruscus aculeatus · Dried Root & Rhizome · Traditional European Botanical
Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is an evergreen European botanical recognised for its upright stems, small red berries and distinctive flattened, leaf-like branches.
A member of the asparagus family, Butcher's Broom grows naturally in woodland and scrubland across parts of Europe and the Mediterranean region. Its common name comes from the historical use of its stiff branches for making small household and butcher's cleaning brooms.
Beneath the soil, the plant develops an underground rhizome and root system that has featured in traditional European herbal preparations for generations.
Our dried Butcher's Broom Root is supplied as a single dried botanical ingredient, with an earthy, woody character traditionally associated with specialist herbal preparations.
At Flowers from my Meadow, we keep it pure and uncomplicated: dried Butcher's Broom Root, thoughtfully packed for your botanical pantry.
Traditional Botanical Preparations
Butcher's Broom root and rhizome have historically been processed into dried-root preparations and herbal extracts.
Traditional preparation methods include decoctions and specialised extracts. The composition and strength of these preparations vary, and loose dried root should not be considered equivalent to a standardised medicinal extract.
Seek guidance from a suitably qualified herbal practitioner before preparing Butcher's Broom for internal use. We do not recommend a self-directed medicinal dosage.
Botanical Preparation — Traditional Root Decoction
In traditional botanical practice, dried roots are often gently simmered in water rather than steeped like delicate leaves or flowers.
For an educational botanical display or preparation demonstration, the dried root can be placed alongside a small pot of water and complementary botanicals such as ginger.
A qualified practitioner should determine whether an actual ingestible preparation is appropriate, including the required quantity and method.

Consult a healthcare professional before use, particularly if you have a cardiovascular condition, blood-pressure concerns or take prescription medication.
