Orange & Clove Simmer Pot
A simple citrus-and-spice home-fragrance ritual, for attentive stovetop use only.
Ingredients & materials
- 3–5 whole cloves
- A few pieces of dried sweet orange peel
- 1 cinnamon stick or a few cinnamon-bark pieces
- 2 cups water, plus additional water if needed
- One clean saucepan suitable for the stovetop, with a stable handle
How to prepare
- Place the whole cloves, dried sweet orange peel and cinnamon stick or bark pieces into a small saucepan.
- Add 2 cups of water and place the pan securely on an appropriate stovetop burner.
- Bring the water to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to its lowest practical setting. Keep the pot under active adult supervision at all times.
- Let the fragrance disperse naturally while you remain in the room. Check the water level regularly, and carefully add water before it becomes low; never allow the pan to boil dry.
- When finished, turn off the heat completely. Allow the pot and liquid to cool before moving, handling or discarding its contents.
Star-anise variation · Orange & Spice Simmer Pot
For a richer citrus-and-spice home fragrance, try this archived star-anise variation. This version uses slightly fewer cloves and adds one whole star anise; it is an alternative to the main recipe above, not an extra batch to combine with it.
Ingredients
- A small handful of dried sweet orange peel
- 2–3 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick or a few cinnamon-bark pieces
- 1 whole star anise
- 2 cups water, with additional water available if needed
- A suitable, stable saucepan
Fresh-orange-peel option (source Recipe 123): Instead of the dried orange peel above, you may use a few pieces of clean fresh orange peel for this same star-anise variation. Use fresh or dried peel, not both; keep the cloves, cinnamon, whole star anise and 2 cups water unchanged. Use only for supervised stovetop home fragrance, never for drinking. Follow all simmering-water, ventilation and boil-dry precautions below.
Preparation
- Place the sweet orange peel, cloves, cinnamon and whole star anise into a suitable saucepan, and add 2 cups water.
- Bring to a gentle simmer, then lower the heat while remaining in the room to supervise the pot continuously.
- Check the water level frequently, adding more carefully as needed to prevent the saucepan from boiling dry.
- Turn off the heat when finished. Allow the pan and liquid to cool completely before handling or discarding.
Safety for both versions: This is for home fragrance only, never for drinking or eating. Never leave a simmering saucepan unattended, never use it while sleeping, and keep children and pets away. Follow all the hot-water, stovetop, ventilation and fire precautions below.
Rosemary Variation — Orange, Cinnamon & Rosemary Simmer Pot
This is an alternative to the clove and star-anise preparations above, not an addition to them.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons dried sweet orange peel
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 small sprig of rosemary or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 3 cups water
Preparation
- Place the orange peel, cinnamon and rosemary in a saucepan, then add the water.
- Bring to a gentle simmer and reduce the heat.
- Remain present, checking the water level and replenishing it before the pan runs low.
- Turn off the stove and let the pan and contents cool before disposing of the mixture.
For home fragrance only, not drinking. Follow the essential stovetop, ventilation and hot-water precautions below for all variations.
Essential safety notes
Home fragrance only — do not drink, taste, eat, or serve the contents. A simmer pot involves boiling water and an active heat source: never leave the stove unattended, never use it while asleep, and turn off the burner before leaving the room or home. Prevent boil-dry conditions and avoid splashing hot liquid. Use a stable, heat-safe saucepan on a suitable burner; keep the pan handle safely positioned and the cooking area clear of flammable materials. Ensure adequate ventilation, and stop if strong scents cause respiratory discomfort. Keep children and pets well away from hot surfaces, loose spices and liquid. Never add essential oils, alcohol or other flammable fragrance concentrates. Do not use candles or an open-flame alternative. The mixture is not a beverage, medicine, air purifier or therapeutic treatment. Clean the cooled saucepan after use; do not store the used water or reuse the ingredients.
