The Story Behind Frankincense Resin
Frankincense begins not as a flower, leaf or root, but as an aromatic resin produced by trees of the Boswellia genus. The Frankincense stocked by Flowers from my Meadow comes specifically from Boswellia serrata, a tree belonging to the Burseraceae family.
Native to the Indian subcontinent, Boswellia serrata grows as a deciduous tree with distinctive papery bark and compound leaves. Hidden beneath that bark is the beginning of the aromatic material that has made Frankincense recognisable across generations.
The resin is traditionally obtained by making careful incisions in the tree’s bark. A naturally sticky oleo-gum-resin emerges from these openings and is exposed to the air, where it gradually begins to harden. Once dried, it forms the irregular tears and pieces we recognise as Frankincense Resin.
No two pieces look exactly alike. Natural variations in colour, size, shape and translucency are part of the character of the raw material, with individual pieces ranging through creamy, pale golden, honeyed and deeper amber tones.
Unheated Frankincense carries its own subtle resinous fragrance, but its aromatic character becomes much more expressive when gently heated. The resin softens and releases a complex fragrance that can feel woody, balsamic, gently sweet and citrus-like.

How to Burn Frankincense Resin
A traditional Frankincense ritual begins with a small amount of natural resin, a suitable heatproof burner and gentle heat to release its warm, woody and balsamic aroma.
As the resin gently heats, its distinctive aromatic character begins to unfold into the surrounding space.
Prepare Your Burner
Place a suitable charcoal disc inside a stable, heatproof incense burner on a heat-resistant surface in a well-ventilated area.
Light the Charcoal
Using appropriate tongs, carefully light the charcoal according to its instructions. Allow it to heat fully and develop a light ash coating before adding the resin
Add the Resin
Place a small piece or a few small pieces of Frankincense Resin onto the heated charcoal. Start with a little — more resin can be added gradually if desired.
Enjoy the Aroma
Allow the Frankincense Resin to gently heat and release its aromatic smoke. Add another small piece when desired, rather than placing a large amount onto the charcoal at once.

Frankincense, Honey & Lemon Botanical Tea
A warm botanical tea combining a tiny amount of food-grade Frankincense Resin with fresh lemon and honey for a distinctive citrusy, resinous cup.
Ingredients:
1 very small piece food-grade Frankincense Resin
250 ml water
1–2 slices fresh lemon
1 tsp honey, or to taste
Lightly crush the Frankincense Resin. Add it to the water and gently simmer for 5–10 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain thoroughly. Add fresh lemon and sweeten with honey to taste. Serve warm.
Frankincense has an intense aromatic flavour, so begin with only a very small piece. Use only resin specifically supplied as food-grade.
Create a Frankincense Infused Oil
