Menopause Awareness Month – October 18

Menopause Awareness Month – October 18

Menopause Awareness Month, observed every October, is an opportunity to open the conversation about a stage of life that affects every woman yet is still surrounded by silence, stigma, and confusion. On October 18, we mark World Menopause Day, a global call to action to raise awareness, share education, and offer support to those navigating the transition into perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.

Why Menopause Awareness Matters

Menopause is not a disease — it’s a natural biological process — but for many women, it comes with disruptive symptoms that impact physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, and even careers. Research shows that millions of women silently endure hot flashes, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, weight changes, and sleep disturbances, often without adequate support or understanding from their communities or workplaces.

By talking about menopause openly, we help normalize the conversation, empower women to advocate for themselves, and make sure they have access to the resources, care, and products they need.

Understanding the Stages

Menopause is a journey with three stages:

  • Perimenopause – The transitional phase, usually beginning in the 40s, where hormones fluctuate and symptoms like irregular cycles, night sweats, and mood changes may appear.
  • Menopause – Defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual cycle.
  • Postmenopause – The years following menopause, where hormonal changes may continue to affect bone, heart, and cognitive health.

Each stage is unique, and no two journeys look exactly the same. That’s why education and community are so important.

The Hormone–Gut Connection

A healthy gut plays a surprisingly big role in hormone balance. Your gut microbiome helps metabolize and clear excess estrogen, supports healthy immune function, and reduces inflammation that can make perimenopausal symptoms worse.

During menopause, declining estrogen levels can slow digestion and change gut flora, leading to bloating, constipation, or discomfort. This is why nourishing your gut — with fiber, fermented foods, and prebiotics — can make a big difference in easing symptoms and improving overall wellbeing.

At Flowers from my Meadow, we encourage women to pair our hormone-support products with gut-friendly habits like:

  • Eating plenty of plant-based fiber (think flaxseed, baobab, and inulin).
  • Incorporating fermented foods or kefir water.
  • Drinking enough water to support gentle detoxification.
  • Supporting the liver — the body’s hormone filter — with bitters and herbal teas.
